Rising prices and a proposal to raise the state's minimum wage will be the topic of a town hall meeting to be held Thursday evening at 6 p.m. at the West Boulevard headquarters of Racine Educators United. The event will be headlined by Peter Rickman of the Milwaukee Hospitality and Services Workers Union who also serves as a leader of the Living Wage Coalition. The state's minimum wage of $7.25 has stood since 2009. State Representative Angelina Cruz is the lead author in the Assembly to raise the minimum wage to $20 an hour by 2030, tie it to inflation and restore local decision-making on wages.

The father of three children who died in the Thanksgiving night fire in Kenosha last year made his first court appearance Wednesday on child neglect charges. A signature bond was set for 39 year-old Joshua Kannin who's being represented by Racine attorney Pat Cafferty. Kannin told investigators he ran out of his smoky apartment to get help. When he returned, he said the fire was too intense to enable him to go back inside and reach the kids. According to the criminal complaint, Kannin admitted to removing a second-floor smoke detector.

A Racine County deputy sheriff who’s on leave is expected to make his first court appearance Thursday on misconduct in office and domestic violence charges. 48 year-old Jonathan Bechman allegedly used law enforcement resources to track down his estranged wife who moved out of state. He’s also accused of two cases of domestic violence.

The Kenosha County Sheriff's Office is recommending a variety of charges against four people after drugs and stolen property were found in a home on Highway 83 in Trevor. The charges include mail theft. The suspects are in their 40s and 50s.
