Man On Life Support After Being Shot By Deputy Near Milwaukee Lakefront

Sheriff Clarke Identifies Man Shot As Terry Williams; Deputy Not Yet Named

(AP/WPR)---A 19-year-old man is on life support after he was shot by a sheriff's deputy on Milwaukee's lakefront.

The man was driving an SUV Sunday evening when deputies tried to pull it over for a traffic violation and he fled, Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke said at a press conference Monday afternoon. The man, identified as Terry Williams, was hit in the head, Clarke said.

A female passenger was shot in the shoulder, he said.

The two were shot near Bradford Beach and taken to the hospital Sunday night, according to the Milwaukee Fire Department.

A 9mm handgun was found in the vehicle. Clarke declined to give further details and didn't take questions at the press conference.

Citizen video shows an SUV driving up a curb with a sheriff's vehicle in pursuit when an officer appears on foot with a gun drawn. Multiple shots can be heard on the video. The SUV struck a car before it stopped.

Fire department Chief Deputy Terry Lintonen said Monday first responders were dispatched to Lincoln Memorial Dr. on a report of gunshot injuries about 7:40 p.m.

The lakefront and the adjacent thoroughfare were congested with people Sunday evening when temperatures remained above normal.

Waukesha County sheriff's deputies are handling the case because the law requires an outside agency to investigate when an officer is involved in a shooting.
