Name Apparently Chosen For Elk's Club Redevelopment

The company that's turning a downtown Kenosha landmark into a boutique hotel and conference center apparently has picked a name for the development. Say hello to "The Stella Hotel & Ballroom."

An ad that appears in the recently-released 2018 edition of the Kenosha Area Visitors Guide says the building that once was the Elk's Club will start taking reservations this spring for space that'll be available when the place opens next spring.

The launch appears to be a little later than anticipated only just last fall.  At a public appearance in September, Ted Matkom, Wisconsin Market President for Gorman & Co., indicated at the time that the target date was December of this year.

The ad boasts of a two-story ballroom with a 250-person capacity.

Apparently the main bar will be called "The 1844." A seasonal rooftop bar will also be available.

Work began in earnest just last spring to renovate the building and start construction on an addition. The dilapidated, water-leaking structure had been ripe for demolition until a citizens' group sprung up to argue that it should be spared. That's when Gorman stepped in. The company has a strong track record of reclaiming old buildings for new uses.

The significance of the chosen name "Stella" wasn't clear Sunday night. Kenosha's Stella family has run the Casa Capri restaurant on Kenosha's north side for decades.
