New Details on Proposed Foxconn Plant

A few more details about that proposed Foxconn plant have slipped out.

A second local legislator is using Foxconn to motivate Gov. Walker and the legislature to come together on a transportation funding plan that would include, among other things, money to complete I-94 expansion through Racine County.

In a letter to special interest groups and businesses, State Representative Robin Vos said that Foxconn has indicated its desire to locate in southeastern Wisconsin, and create up to 10,000 jobs but that work on improving I-94 remains delayed. He didn't elaborate.

Last week State Senator Van Wanggaard said that he used the Foxconn argument in a meeting with Gov. Walker on transportation issues. Wanggaard, though, did not disclose the jobs figure, nor did he say that Foxconn has expressed a definite interest in Wisconsin.

The Taiwanese maker of smartphones, flat screens and other electronic devices has said that it will decide sometime this month on a site for its first U.S. manufacturing plant. Wisconsin is believed to be among several states that are in the running.

Wanggaard confirmed last week that officials in Racine County have been working to assemble a large tract of land that could be used by Foxconn or by other larger manufacturers.

Racine Mayor John Dickert said last week that the city has been approached about supplying water for a large manufacturing plant, but that it has not directly been involved in the county-level discussions.
