(WGTD)---A proposal to build several dozen single-family homes on the site of a demolished grade school in Racine will be considered by a city council committee Monday night.
Geise School at 5120 Byrd Ave. was torn down in 2022 as part of Racine Unified's downsizing and modernization program.
Under the proposal, the city's Community Development Authority would buy the property from the school district. The city would use tax incremental financing to build $2.3 million worth of roads, sidewalks and sewers on the 34-lot site.
The C-D-A would then sell the lots to Neumann Homes.
School district and city employees would get the first crack at buying half of the homes. In addition, the CDA would provide downpayment assistance of to $50,000 per lot.
The agreement dictates the size of the homes: 11 would be single-story homes of up to 1,600 sq. ft. while the remaining wouldbe two-story homes of up to 1,900 sq. ft.
The deal will be considered Monday night by the council's Finance and Personnel Committee.
The city and many other communities have been dealing with a shortage of affordable single-family homes and apartments.
