No Ryan Rematch for Solen; Panel to Discuss Homelessness; Kenosha Democrats to Hold Listening Session; New Carthage/GTC Partnership

A man in his 20s was fatally shot in the 600 blk. of North Memorial Drive Sunday evening, according to a news release from Racine Police. The victim purportedly had been sitting on a porch when gunfire erupted, according to the Journal Times. Police said the man died at the hospital. The news release doesn't say whether anyone's in custody, although police are asking for the public's help.

The last Democrat to lose to Paul Ryan in the 1st Congressional District says he won't pursue a rematch in 2018. In a news release issued Sunday, Ryan Solen cites health reasons. He also said he's urging nationally-known political commentator David Yankovich to seek the nomination. Solen writes: "Of the many people who appear to be exploring primary campaigns, I believe David Yankovich is the only one who can win against Paul Ryan." Yankovich is planning to move soon to southeast Wisconsin, according to Solen's former spokesperson.

A Kenosha County committee is expected to have a discussion Monday afternoon on the issue of homelessness. The item on the agenda of the Human Services Board comes a little over a week after a low-barrier shelter, First Step, closed its doors under city pressure. The board will meet Monday afternoon at 4 in the county's job center.

Three Kenosha legislators are teaming up to hold a listening session on the proposed state budget Monday. Assembly Minority Leader Peter Barca, State Senator Bob Wirch and State Representative Tod Ohnstad--all Democrats--will convene the meeting in the north side branch of the Kenosha Public Library at 5 p.m. Gov. Walker's proposed budget for the next fiscal year beginning in July is currently in the hands of the Joint Finance Committee.

The bonds between Gateway Technical College and Carthage College are being tightened. What's being described as a sweeping transfer agreement is expected to be unveiled Monday. Eligible Gateway graduates will soon be able to transfer into more than 40 Carthage undergraduate degree programs. Both Gateway President Bryan Albrecht and Carthage President Gregory Woodward are expected to speak at a presentation to be held at Gateway in Kenosha Monday morning beginning at 11.
