(WGTD)---A man described as a suspect is dead and two people suffered gunshot wounds in an incident that occurred a couple of blocks west of the Kenosha County Courthouse on 56th St. Monday evening.
Police responded to the area on a report of an active shooter and were immediately fired upon, according to KPD spokesman Lt. Joseph Nosalik. Officers returned the fire.
Because of the possibility that police gunfire may have killed the man, the investigation has been turned over to the state Justice Dept.
Of the wounded, one was taken to the hospital in critical condition while the other is serious. Nosalik said he didn't know the nature of the relationships between the purported suspect and the two victims.
The shootings apparently occurred within a house, as police were initially told that the two victims were being held hostage.
According to scanner traffic, several fire department rescue squads were called to the scene and staged at Frank Elementary School. At least two of the people who were shot were driven the short distance to the school for treatment in a police car because the area where the shots were fired was not deemed to be secure.
