(WGTD)---An $80 million apartment and condo project appears to be the first proposed private investment component of an eight-block downtown Kenosha redevelopment project.
Brindisi Towers would be built on vacant land just north of the Municipal Building, and would consist of first-floor retail, below and above ground parking and a pair of towers, ten and eleven stories high, that would contain a mix of 134 apartments and condos, all with views of either Lake Michigan or the harbor or both.
The concept isn’t new. It was proposed in a slightly different form over a dozen years ago, but plans stalled.
The new version has a different developer: A-R-D Incorporated of Milwaukee.
Kenosha’s Plan Commission is expected to take its first look at the resurrected version at its regular meeting this Thursday. The Commission will be asked to approve looser height restrictions for the downtown area.
Brindisi would be part of a much larger redevelopment plan that would include construction of a new city hall and a park, to be located in part on land where the current Municipal Building now stands. The new city hall would be built in the northeast quadrant of Sheridan Rd. and 56th St. The former city police department building is expected to be demolished.
The City Council has already approved a new tax incremental financing district to pay for public improvements in the area. In addition to the park, two public parking ramps are planned.
The developer who would build the new city hall has yet to be identified and plans have yet to be approved.
