Public Libraries Prepping for Curbside Service

Apr. 22, 2020 4:55p

(WGTD)---Many libraries throughout the state will be taking advantage of Gov. Evers’ relaxed ‘Safer at Home’ order that includes a new exception for curbside delivery of library materials.

Libraries in Kenosha, Racine, Lake Geneva and Elkhorn are among those offering the service starting as early as this Friday.

Residents will either call or email in their requests, then will be given a pick up time. In order to observe social distancing requirements, patrons in most cases will be required to step out of their vehicles and retrieve their bagged-up materials from tables.

In Kenosha, curbside service will be offered only at the Southwest Library and will begin Friday the 24th. Library Director Barbara Brattin notes Kenosha librarians have some experience under their belts as the service was provided last month for a week before ‘Safer at Home’ was issued. Brattin says it was popular. "A lot of people expressed how happy they were to have this service," she said.

In Racine, curbside service will begin on Monday, although Library Director Jessica MacPhail says orders are already being taken. "We have about 500 people who are waiting for items in the building. If they take a look through the windows they can actually see those items on carts," MacPhail said. "And starting Monday we'll be able to get those items into their hands," she said.

Most libraries that offer curbside service have posted notifications, instructions and any limitations they may have on their websites.
