Racine County Exec Says Health Inspectors Will Be Watching Reopenings

May 14, 2020 8p

(WGTD)---With no new local restrictions in place, Racine County businesses in all but the city, Wind Point and Elmwood Park are starting to reopen following Wednesday night’s state supreme court ruling against Gov. Evers’ Safer at Home order.

That doesn’t mean they’ll have a green light to ignore common sense virus mitigation measures. If a bar, for example, packs ‘um in night after night they may be getting a visit from the Central Racine County Health Department. But Racine County Executive Jonathan Delagrave says he’s confident that won’t happen. "We trust businesses and overall we trust people to make the best individual decisions for themselves and their families," he said.

In Kenosha County, local restrictions have taken the place of Safer at Home.

In a news release Thursday, both Kenosha County Executive Jim Kreuser and Mayor John Antaramian said they’re comfortable with the slower approach.

Kreuser said some of the Safer at Home restrictions in Kenosha County could be eased toward the end of next week.

Health department officials are still nervously looking at the numbers. Racine County saw a new case increase of 72 Thursday, thanks in part to continued testing at a National Guard site in Burlington. Kenosha County’s new case number rose by eight from Wednesday evening through noon Thursday.

In addition, a new COVID-19 related death was reported in Racine County, bringing the total to 18. In Kenosha County, the number stands at 17.
