Racine Mayor Mason Discusses Strengthening Neighborhoods; Redevelopment Strategies

May 2, 2026 3:10p

(WGTD)---Racine Mayor Cory Mason believes a majority of city residents support his redevelopment strategies that include an emphasis on strengthening neighborhoods.

In recording this week’s Community Matters program, Mason told program co-host Gary Vaillancourt that he began his tenure nine years ago with a deep desire to build a better community. "There's always a set of the community that will complain the way things are but then don't want anything to change. That exists in every community," he said. "But I think overall the city was really hungry for the change. I think they wanted to see investment in the downtown...the Horlick buildings saved. And they wanted to see their neighborhood homes repaired. We've really taken an all-above strategy on what redevelopment looks like here."

Mason went on to explain that strengthening neighborhoods involves addressing a variety of intertwined issues.

Looking ahead, Mason said his top priority is pushing for the extension of community rail from Kenosha through Racine to Milwaukee.
