Rights Workshop Held in Racine for Undocumented Workers

Racine---The top issue voiced at a workshop Sunday for undocumented workers was a concern for their American-born children.

About 75 people attended the session at the Labor Center. Organized by the immigrant rights group Voces De La Frontera, the event featured a representative of the Mexican consulate in Chicago.

The session was held almost entirely in Spanish. Valeria Ruiz of the immigrant rights group said afterward attendees received forms that once filled out would give a relative temporary custody of their children should they, the parents, be deported. "It would take effect the same day they got detained so the children are able to stay with somebody they know," she said.

Eventually, the relative could bring the children to the Mexican consulate, and they'd ben escorted to Mexico for reunification with their parents.

Discussion also centered on the benefits of dual citizenship for children, Ruiz said.

Other topics included advice on what to say or act if approached by an ICE agent.

President Trump has said that only undocumented workers with criminal records or pending charges should have to worry about deportation, but many in the Hispanic community don’t believe him.

A similar workshop was held last week in Lake Geneva.
