RUSD's #2 On Track For Top Job; GED Initiative Claims Early Success

Racine Unified won't have to undergo an expensive search to find a replacement for Superintendent Lolli Haws when her contract expires at the end of the next school year. At its regularly-scheduled meeting Monday night, the school board is expected to formally signal its intent to name the district's number two man to the position. Under an "employee retention agreement," Eric Gallien will receive an extra $1,700 a month for agreeing to stick around while waiting for the top job, passing up any other offers of employment should they come his way. Gallien, who currently serves as deputy superintendent, recently completed a year-long program that trains administrators to lead urban school districts. Gallien came to RUSD three years ago from Milwaukee Public Schools.

A new push to persuade Racine County residents who lack a high school diploma to obtain an equivalency degree drew 86 people to an information fair at Gateway Technical College Thursday. "The fair was a first step to achieving our goal of 100 Racine County residents attaining their GED by the end of this year," said county Workforce Solutions manager Mark Mundl. Over 15,000 county residents reportedly lack high school credentials as employers find it increasingly difficult to fill certain positions.
