"StoryCorps" Microphones Coming to Southeast Wisconsin

Feb. 19, 2020 1:30p

(WGTD)---"StoryCorps"--best known for producing the powerful and touching interview segments that air on NPR's Morning Edition---is coming to Lake Geneva.

The non-profit is partnering with the Lake Geneva Public Library to give area residents and an interview partner a chance to sit at StoryCorps microphones to talk about a topic or experience that matters to them. Participants walk away with a copy of the interview. A digital file goes to the Library of Congress, where it will be preserved for generations to come.

Some of the interviews, scoped down to a several-minute-long segment, are selected to air on NPR. "StoryCorps" segments run Friday mornings at 5:20 and 7:20 on WGTD and other NPR affiliates. .

A kick-off event, where members of the public have a chance to meet the StoryCorps crew, will be held Sunday, March 15th at 12:30 at the library. The year-long partnership is funded by the Lake Geneva Public Library Foundation with support from additional community groups.

StoryCorps supplies the equipment for the 40-minute-long recording sessions. Trained facilitators will be available to guide participants. The process will be explained at the kick-off.

"Looking a loved one in the eyes and asking about his or her life is one of the greatest gifts we can give one another," says StoryCorps Founder and President Dave Isay in a news release. "The simple act of listening tells them how much they matter, and documenting that conversation for posterity tells them that they won't be forgotten"
