Strong Interest in Serving on Racine School Board

Sept. 14, 2023 9:20p

(WGTD)---The remaining seven members of the Racine School Board will have some decisions to make when they go about filling two vacancies on the board.

A total of five candidates have applied for one seat, while two met the Wednesday night filing deadline for the other.

In the downtown-area 6th district, last represented by Auntavia Jackson, two candidates are up for consideration. They are April Harris and Chris Hefel.

In the 8th District, last represented by Matt Hanser, the candidates are former RUSD principal Angela Apmann, food service manager and culinary arts instructor Christian De Jong, consultant Nikki Fisher, Denis Navratil and David Stogsdill. The 8th District covers parts of Caledonia, Wind Point and North Bay.

Current school board president Jane Barbian said the winning candidates will join a board that already works well together. "We have a great board right now," said Barbian on WGTD's Morning Show this week. "Some of the school boards in our area are really struggling because they have such different voices. But our board really operates smoothly."

The school board could pare the list of candidates a bit as early as next Tuesday when members will decide which candidates to call in for interviews at a meeting scheduled for the following Monday.

Barbian said the two board members who recently resigned did so because they moved out of the district they were elected to represent.
