Suspect Shot Sunday by a Kenosha Cop Said to be in Stable Condition

Updated at 1a to reflect new information from the Kenosha News; Updated at 9a with condition report;

Kenosha---The suspect who was shot Sunday evening by a police officer in the Wilson neighborhood is in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries, according to spokesperson for the state Department of Justice.

Johnny Koremenos declined to provide any other information Monday morning, saying that additional details, including the officer's identity, would be released at a later date.

According to a news release Sunday night from the Kenosha Police Dept., officers responded to the 5000 blk. of 39th Ave. for a report of a man making threats with a gun. As officers arrived, a suspect ran, with one officer in foot pursuit. "During the chase, the officer discharged their firearm and struck the suspect," the release said. "The suspect was transported to a local hospital and the officer was not injured."

The Kenosha News reports that the victim may have been a teenager who'd been shot in the back and buttocks as he tried to enter a duplex on 38th Ave.

Because a police officer fired the shots that resulted in injuries, state agents will conduct the investigation, with help from the Kenosha County Sheriff's Dept.

Sunday night officers cordoned off a block-long stretch of the neighborhood, which consists primarily of duplexes and single-family homes.

A resident of the area. George Garnett, says he was sitting in his backyard when he heard two gunshots. Soon afterward, five squad cars sped passed his house, stopping at the duplex in question.  "They came up the street like lightening," he said. "They rolled up onto the yard."

Garnett said he saw what appeared to be police emptying the duplex of its occupants, and handcuffing several individuals for what appeared to be questioning.
