Teacher Fired For Using Racial Slur

Dec. 15, 2019 8:45p

(WGTD)---For the second year in a row, a teacher at Bradford High School faced disciplinary action for using the “N” word in a classroom.

According to documents obtained by WGTD under the state’s Open Records Law, a science teacher was fired by the school board for an incident that occurred in September.

The teacher purportedly used a racial slur multiple times in in front of students. When a student complained, the teacher tried to persuade him why he shouldn’t be offended, and then contacted a parent of the boy to continue the dialogue. Other students complained as well.

A Human Resources staffer stepped in, and reportedly was met with an attitude.

The woman’s attorney told WGTD News there’s another side of the story.  She initially agreed to respond to WGTD in writing, then backed off, saying she wasn’t ready to talk just yet.

Last year, a Bradford language teacher resigned after using the ‘N’ word in class after overhearing two students use the term in conversation.

It appears two more teachers are up for disciplinary action this week.

Two closed-door meetings are scheduled by the board for Tuesday night, although one teacher is requesting that at least part of the proceeding be conducted in public. Sessions are scheduled for 5:30 and 7. The district declined further comment.

Monday night, the board is scheduled to be in both open and closed session. Renewal of the superintendent’s contract is one of the items on the agenda.
