UNFI Plans to Pull Out of Sturtevant; Layoff Announcement Comes on Top of Reductions at Cree

Mar. 17, 2026 noon

(WGTD)---A grocery wholesaler is closing its distribution center in Sturtevant and laying off over 400 workers.

United Natural Foods, Inc. is consolidating its Racine County operation with a facility in Joliet, Illinois that it plans to expand and upgrade, according to a statement from the company.

443 jobs will be lost, according to a notice filed by the company on Monday with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development. The layoffs are expected to begin this summer.

The 425,000 sq. ft. warehouse opened to much fanfare just a dozen years ago. At the time, word that the company had selected Sturtevant for its center with over 200 jobs was heralded as an economic development breakthrough.

The announcement comes just a few days after Cree Lighting announced plans to immediately lay off 172 workers at its headquarters in Sturtevant. Cree is contracting with an undisclosed firm to manufacture its line of electronics and LED lighting.
