(WGTD)---Confirming suspicions, four-term State Senator Van Wanggaard has decided against a re-election bid this fall.
In explaining his decision in a message to voters, the Racine Republican indicated that his concerns over his age and health, and the health of family members, won out over his strong desire to continue serving. Wanggaard is 78.
Wanggaard had not been engaging in fundraising in the manner consistent with that of a candidate seeking office.
Wanggaard's newly-redrawn senate district includes parts of Racine, Caledonia, areas west of I-94 and several Milwaukee County municipalities.
Last summer, Racine Transit Director Trevor Jung announced his plans to run for the seat as a Democrat.
The filing deadline is June 1.
Wanggaard is the second Republican state senator within the WGTD listening area to retire. Stephen Nass is stepping down after having served some 40 years in the legislature. His district runs from I-94 in Kenosha County west into Walworth County. At least two Republicans have indicated they plan to run for the seat.
