Walker Reacts to Foxconn Report

Wisconsin is so close to landing Foxconn that a memorandum of understanding could be announced in two weeks, according to a couple of Republican legislative leaders.

What does Gov. Walker have to say about that?  "I've talked to neither of them directly about a specific proposal and so that's all speculation at this point," Walker said during a stop Thursday at the Racine County complex in Ives Grove.

Speaking to reporters,  Walker would say nothing about behind-the-scenes negotiations with Foxconn, a Taiwanese maker of electronics that purportedly wants to build a large plant in the U-S employing thousands.

Legislators say the state has been working on an incentive package that could cost millions of dollars over a multi-year period. Wisconsin is said to be in competition with a half-dozen other states.

Why the push to land a company as big as Foxconn? "The #1 concern that I hear from people is 'I want a reason for my kids and grandkids to stay in Wisconsin'," said Walker. "Having some of these high-tech, innovative jobs considering coming to Wisconsin is a good thing," he said.

Foxconn's chairman said at a stockholders' meeting  in June that a decision on a U.S. plant location would be announced in July.

Several sites in Wisconsin reportedly are being studied, including one on the Mt. Pleasant/Sturtevant area.
