(WGTD)---Gov. Walker says he’s more confident than ever that the Foxconn promise of thousands of high-paying jobs will pan out. And he’s using lofty language to make his point.
"There's a lot of things we do in our time in office," said Walker just before signing the nearly $3 billion Foxconn incentives bill at the SC Johnson iMET Technology Center in Sturtevant Monday. "I hope this is one of the proudest," he said.
Foxconn is expected to break ground on the plant next spring at a site not far from iMET.
Walker is pinning the project’s success on the appeal of Foxconn’s products, and a belief that the state will come up with enough skilled workers. "I believe we can produce the talent, supply chain, the tools and the opportunities not to just make this successful but make it one of the most successful ventures in the history of the world," Walker said.
Most legislative Democrats call it all a political stunt that will short-change funding for schools and roads for years to come. Local Democrats though supported the expensive package.
Peter Barca, Tod Ohnstad and Corey Mason, along with Republicans Samantha Kerkman, Tom Weatherston, Robin Vos and Van Wanggaard lined up next to the governor Monday to watch him sign the bill.
Several hundred people were in the audience.
Next month, contracts between Foxconn, and state and local governments are expected to be unveiled and signed.
