Canceled Kenosha School Board Meeting Will be Held Thursday Evening

Aug. 25, 2021 9:40p

(WGTD)---The Kenosha School Board meeting on Tuesday that was canceled because of an unruly crowd has been rescheduled for Thursday evening. But this time, the meeting will take place virtually.

Citizens will still be able to comment, but they’ll need to log in and sign up virtually.

What’s drawing all the attention is a possible mask mandate for the fall term. School Board President Yolanda Adams Tuesday night refused to convene the meeting because the large crowd declined to use one of two overflow rooms so that everyone could socially distance yet still address the board. Adams tells WGTD News she believes some people in the audience were intent on trying to block the meeting from taking place. She blames a traveling crowd that’s been showing up at area school board meetings whenever a possible mask mandate is scheduled to be discussed.

She says board members on Tuesday were prepared to stay all night to give everyone a chance to speak. "I think all board members were fine with staying as late as it takes," Adams said. "The crowd size wasn't the issue. The fact that they would not follow directions to the over flow rooms is what cause me to feel it (the meeting) was unsafe," she said.

Kenosha Unified administration is recommending a mandatory mask policy for students under the age of 12, while older students would be given the option of wearing masks.

Adams says she personally believes everyone should wear a mask.

Thursday's meeting will begin at 7 and will be available for viewing on the district’s You Tube channel. Anyone interested in addressing the board needs to sign up three hours beforehand.
