Car Dealers Urged to Take Extra Precautions Against Thefts

Kenosha---The thieves that have been breaking into car dealerships and driving off with vehicles apparently aren’t picky.

On the same night that several vehicles were stolen in Libertyville, another crew broke into the Nissan dealership along I-94 in Kenosha County. Sheriff Dave Beth says those thieves tried to steal vehicles that were in for service. "It appears they went for vehicles in the service area where the keys were available," he said at a Tuesday news conference.

Beth says dealers may want to consider locking up keys for all vehicles, not just the new models.

The Nissan thieves weren’t successful. They either gave up or were scared off after being unable to crash through an overhead door. The engines of four vehicles that were in for service were running when deputies arrived. They’d been checking dealerships in response to the Libertyville thefts.
