(WGTD)---There's a bit of progress to report in the drive to establish an extension of commuter rail from Kenosha through Racine to Milwaukee.
The three cities have officially executed an intergovernmental agreement that establishes the Milwaukee Area-Racine-Kenosha Passenger Rail Commission, or MARK for short. This comes after the city councils of all three municipalities approves creation of the commission by votes that were unanimous.
The commission is expected to become a vehicle for the area to apply for continued federal funding. According to a news release from the office of Kenosha Mayor Dave Bogdala, the initiative will also help the cities evaluate passenger rail opportunities.
Each municipality is represented on the commission by three appointees. Kenosha commission members include Alderman Eric Haugaard, former State Representative Peter Barca and Joan Wilk. Racine Mayor Cory Mason will lead the Racine delegation which also includes Alderman Maurice Horton and Scott Leonard.
The planning process is being financed with a $5 million federal grant that was awarded to Racine.
The new commission does not have taxing authority.
