(WGTD)---Plans are proceeding to fill a vacant school site in Kenosha with 28 single-family homes.

The city council Monday night is expected to approve a $246,000 contract for a Milwaukee engineering firm to plat a 5.6-acre site where the side-by-side McKinley middle and elementary school buildings once stood.

The company will be instructed to preserve playground equipment which will become the centerpiece of a 1.5-acre park. Also, they'll plan for the extension of 56th St. from 30th to 33rd Ave. The extension will directly connect the property to the Kenosha Innovation Neighborhood to the east.

Homes currently surround the McKinley site.

The city gained control of the land in a swap with Kenosha Unified. The two schools were part of the district's recent downsizing.

Before any dirt is moved, the engineering firm's plans are expected to be reviewed at two public meetings.
