Defendant's Competency Questioned in Fatal Shooting of Salem Lakes Man

(WGTD)---One of four defendants in a fatal shoot-out with a Salem Lakes man whom they had tried to rob will undergo a competency evaluation.

24-year-old Anthony Harris’ attorney made the request in court Friday. The judge quickly granted the request.

In a conversation with a reporter after the short court proceeding, the attorney would not elaborate on the reasons for the request. Such a request is usually made when a client's ability to comprehend the legal proceedings against him is called into question by the defense.

Harris was among four Racine men that went to the home of Joe Riley last November.

They believed that Riley would be a soft target for a robbery because he reportedly was a drug dealer.

But Riley responded with gunfire when the robbers kicked in his door. Two of the robbers were shot.

Harris, who wasn’t injured, gave investigators multiple versions of what had happened that night.

One version had Harris emptying the chamber of his gun into Riley’s home.

Riley was hit four times and died at the scene. A female acquaintance was wounded, but she has since recovered.

The court cases against the three other defendants are moving through the system separately.  Pre-trial hearings are scheduled for this fall.
