Democrat to Run in Wanggaard's 21st State Senate District

Republican State Senator Van Wanggaard is expected to have a Democratic opponent this fall.

Community activist and yoga instructor Lori Hawkins of Bristol has announced that she’ll seek her party’s nomination this August.

Hawkins, who has two school-age children, says she’s running in part to promote bi-partisanship and compromise.

Hawkins says she realizes Wanggaard’s district is extremely conservative. "My eyes are open to that, absolutely," Hawkins said in a WGTD interview. "But it's not an excuse to not jump in if it's something I believe in."  The district primarily covers the western halves of both Kenosha and Racine counties.

Hawkins also says she doesn't expect her campaign to be flush with cash. "I don't believe I'll have large donors," she said. "But I believe there are a lot of people who are going to chip in small donations that'll happen again and again. We're just going to build it that way."

Before focusing her attention on her yoga business and community issues, Hawkins was a stay-at-home mom and a English teacher in the Milwaukee Public Schools.

Wanggaard did not respond Wednesday for requests for comment.
