Disturbances, Liquor Law Tickets Endanger Two Kenosha Cabaret Licenses

June 14, 2020 3:10p

(WGTD)---Two Kenosha dance bars that are in danger of losing their cabaret licenses because of liquor law violations and various types of disturbances are scheduled to go before the city council Monday night.

Police have made "adverse" recommendations against the Rain Bar & Lounge at Roosevelt Rd. and 30th Ave. and the Red Zone Sports Bar & Grill at 4814 Sheridan Rd.

In the case of the Red Zone, the negative recommendation signals that a compromise reached between the bar and city officials in February of 2019 fell apart. Back then, representatives of the Red Zone accused city officials of having a racial bias in taking action against the bar because it had a mostly minority clientele and featured "hip hop" music.

The most recent series of complaints against the Red Zone include an incident in which a patron was shot and wounded outside of the bar and a Snap Chat video of scantily-clad women dancing for money.

In the case against the Rain Bar, police cite a homicide that occurred near the bar around closing one night in February. Two people were arrested.

In each case, police list dozens of calls for service to both locations that took place over the past 12 months.

The Rain Bar and Red Zone first come up Monday in a special meeting of the city's License and Permit Committee beginning at 4. The committee will meet virtually in a session that's accessible by phone. Citizens will be allowed to speak at the beginning of the meeting.

The committee's recommendations will then be considered at 7 by the full council. That meeting is accessible by phone and by a video feed on the city's website, www.kenosha.org
