(WPR/WGTD)---Wisconsin will receive about $160 million in federal grant money to complete the expansion of I-94 from Milwaukee to the state line--about $86 million less than the state requested last year. Gov. Walker says he isn't concerned about the shortfall, saying it'll be made up with other federal grant money and additional borrowing. The new federal grant means the project will be completed in 2021, 11 years earlier than expected. Racine County Executive Jonathan Delagrave says he and others lobbied hard for the money, arguing in part that the anticipated increase in traffic brought on by the pending Foxconn development necessitated fast action. Delagrave says he's excited by the news.
(WGTD)---Kenosha Mayor John Antaramian says he won't try to pressure Fleet Farm to promise that it won't try to lower its property assessment, once its new store along I-94 in Kenosha opens. The city's Plan Commission is expected to consider a development agreement Thursday. Antaramian says such a promise wouldn't be binding. He says he remains hopeful that the state will deal with the problem of big box retailers using loopholes in state law to pay less in property taxes. The new store is to go up just west of I-94 at CTH 'K'.
(WGTD)---For the second week in a row, a driver has died in a collision with a dump truck near Burlington. On Wednesday, a 28 year-old Waterford woman was killed when she pulled out from a stop sign into the path of a truck which had the right of way. The accident happened on Highway 11 east of Burlington. Last week a 50 year-old man was killed when his SUV crossed the centerline and struck another dump truck head-on. That accident happened just south of Burlington.
(WGTD)---The Shalom Center could be debt-free soon. An anonymous donor has offered to match--up to $110,000---contributions to the homeless shelter's building fund. The Shalom Center owes just $220,000 on its new shelter, a project that cost about $2 million altogether. Director Lynn Biese-Carroll says the donor has made previous contributions.
