Major Projects in Racine and Kenosha Could Be Funded With Federal COVID Recovery Dollars

(WGTD)---Both Racine and Kenosha could benefit from two grant programs announced in Racine yesterday by Gov. Evers.

Appearing at the Julian Thomas Elementary School Health Clinic, Evers unveiled a $200 million Neighborhood Investment Fund grant program, and a companion $50 million fund to finance healthcare facility improvements. Communities will have to compete for the money.

But Racine Mayor Cory Mason said he believes the city has a good chance of receiving some of the funds to build a larger clinic across the street from Julian Thomas, and combine it with a new community center. The clinic is scheduled to open next month in temporary quarters in the school’s basement. The clinic hopes to eventually qualify for federal support. Racine is the largest city in the Midwest that doesn’t have a clinic with such support.

The funds that were announced Tuesday are being filled by federal COVID recovery dollars.

The second pot of money is what Kenosha Mayor John Antaramian has his eye on as he goes about seeking funds for his proposed Kenosha Innovation Neighborhood. That’s the redevelopment project that’s targeted for the vacant tract in the heart of the city that was once home to auto manufacturing.

City Administrator John Morrissey said the city is currently examining the program’s funding criteria, and plans to apply.
