Memo to Walmart...

Walmart in Somers is seeking permission from village officials to sell alcohol through its new drive-up window while at the same time threatening to sue the village over its property assessment.

The discussion by town and village officials over whether to allow outside-the-store delivery of alcohol from online purchases continued at a work session this week.

Village attorney Jeff Davidson continued to strongly recommend rejecting the application after noting other outstanding legal issues with Walmart.

Successful big box stores have achieved a measure of success across the state in securing lower assessments by comparing themselves to vacant buildings. Legislation to prohibit the practice has been introduced in Madison, but Republicans have blocked the bills.

Town Chairman Mark Molinaro said Tuesday night that outside store liquor application should be rejected on its merits, saying it sends the wrong message when concern remains strong over underaged sales and drunk driving.

The adjacent City of Kenosha has allowed liquor stores to have drive-up windows for a number of years.
