Music Festival Celebrates 10th Year of Raising Cash for Suicide Prevention

Aug. 30, 2019 1p

(WGTD)---A western Kenosha County music festival that’s in its tenth year stands a good chance of reaching its original goal: Raising at least $1 million to prevent suicide.

The Labor of Love Music Festival has been held at New Munster Park off of Geneva Road in Wheatland the day before Labor Day for the past nine years. The event was established by a pair of area families who lost loved ones to suicide.

They’ve raised over $900,000, according to Mark Mullins, the organization’s past president who spoke on WGTD’s Morning Show.

In addition to raising money, the festival is meant to spark discussion about the problem. "We want to embrace life and we want to get the message out," Mullins said.

Money raised by the event has been directed a number of different ways. Crisis centers, research projects and transportation costs for kids who need to travel to see their counselors have all received money.

The headliner for this year’s festival is “Trampled by Turtles,” a Duluth-based band that features a combination of blue grass, folk and rock.

Admission is $30. Kids under 13 are free.

The festival’s hours are noon to 6:30 on Sunday.
