(WGTD)---What could be described as a community-wide planting party resulted in a new "pollinator patch" in Kenosha's Washington Park Saturday.
With the help of some $50,000 worth of grants from several sources, volunteers recruited by the Root-Pike Watershed Initiative Project planted about 3,000 native plants that'll simultaneously capture runoff and hopefully draw greater numbers of pollinators to the park, including the endangered Rusty Patched Bumblebee. The plants replace turf grass that was torn up to make way.
Several hundred volunteers showed up at varying times throughout the day, according to organizer Kristine Heiser. For their efforts, the volunteers were offered a plant to take home, received coupons for free food from Olano's Empanadas and could participate in a raffle.
