Update 8-19--the village board took no action Tuesday night. Mt. Pleasant is expected to be invited in next week to lay out its proposal. Village President Stuart Ten Cate says he favors a referendum on the issue.
(WGTD)---At its regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday night, the Sturtevant Village Board is expected to discuss disbanding the village's police department and contracting out for law enforcement services.
The meeting begins at 6.
The agenda includes a presentation and a public question and answer session.
WGTD reported earlier this month that the board is weighing its options should it decide to disband the village's police department in a cost-cutting move.
The village approached both the Racine County Sheriff's Dept. and the Mt. Pleasant Police Dept. for quotes.
The Sturtevant Police Dept. currently is authorized for a dozen officers and three supervisors, although the chief's position is currently vacant following a retirement.
In a letter addressed to village board members, the Sturtevant Professional Police Association--the union that represents officers--said any decision to disband the police department would result in a loss of local control and diminished service. "This is a decision that cannot be made lightly or quietly," the letter reads.
