Shalom Center's Next Frontier: Carthage College

Aug. 28, 2019 7:50p

(WGTD)---Through its soup kitchen and food pantry, Kenosha’s Shalom Center has been battling hunger for decades in various corners of the community. Now it’s expanding its mission—to include students at Carthage College.

A national student advocacy group says hunger and food insecurity can be one of many impediments that keeps some financially-strapped students from graduating.

Taking note of that, Carthage’s Center for Faith and Spirituality and the Shalom Center have teamed up to establish “Luther’s Lunchbox.”

Open seven days a week, the free service will stock grab and go foods that can be heated up in microwave ovens.

Located in the Siebert Chapel, Luther’s Lunchbox will be available to both residential and commuter students alike.

Although the Shalom Center will donate most of the food, Carthage faculty and staff will contribute additional non-perishable items, according to a Carthage news release.

Trinity Lutheran Church in Kenosha has donated a cabinet for food storage.
