Sparse Turnout For DNR Foxconn Hearing

Just two people spoke in opposition to granting air pollution control permits to Foxconn’s planned manufacturing complex in Mt. Pleasant at a state Department of Natural Resources hearing in Sturtevant Tuesday night. And both speakers represented the League of Women Voters.

Most of the speakers represented economic development groups, local companies and industry consultants, all speaking in support of the applications during the 40-minute hearing. Mt. Pleasant Village President Dave DeGroot also chimed in. "I sincerely believe that Foxconn will be a great local partner in doing everything it can to minimize and mitigate its impact on the environment," he said.

In speaking in opposition, Louise Petering of the League of Women Voters brought up several concerns, including the fact that ozone levels are already considered to be high. "Foxconn's emissions of nitrogen oxides and volatile organic chemicals will push these ambient levels of ozone to consistently higher and unhealthy levels," she said.

The D-N-R will continue to accept written comments on the Foxconn applications through April 16th.

The entire public hearing, including an explanatory preamble from the DNR, was streamed live by WGTD and is available on our Facebook page.
