Suspected Drunk Driver Who Allegedly Caused I-94 Crash Charged

The Milwaukee man who allegedly had been driving drunk with a woman and her three children when he purportedly caused a crash on I-94 in Racine County appeared in court Monday.

Bond for 25 year-old Luis Ortiz Ruiz was set at $500.

According to the criminal complaint, Ruiz's car nudged another Sunday evening, sending both vehicles rolling into a ditch.

Ruiz' vehicle wound up on its roof. A female passenger and her three children made it out on their own while Ruiz had to be extricated.

None of the victims, including the driver of the car that was struck, suffered life-threatening injuries.

The sheriff's department said the children--ages 11, 9 and 5--- weren't wearing seatbelts.

The complaint said Ruiz and his passengers had been at a festival in Chicago. Ruiz--who'd been drinking--argued with the woman over who should drive home to Milwaukee.

The woman lost the argument, and they got as far as Racine County before crashing. Investigators reported that Ruiz' eyes were bloodshot and glossy and that he'd been stumbling around the accident scene. An empty bottle of booze and an empty beer can were found inside the vehicle.

Charges against Ruiz include violating a domestic abuse injunction. Ruiz shouldn't have been with the woman in the first place.
