Virus Test Mess; Police Reforms in Racine; 2nd Downtown Kenosha Market

June 10, 2020 10:15p

From WGTD News:

About a-fifth of the 850 people who were tested for COVID-19 at Central High School in Paddock Lake last week will be asked to get tested again. Kenosha County Health Department Director Jen Freiheit disclosed during her weekly community briefing Wednesday night that an unspecified error in collecting and processing the specimens rendered 170 tests useless. Do-over tests are expected to be available on Friday at the Kenosha Community Health Center’s testing station at Gateway in Kenosha, and at a National Guard-run, one-day community testing site. Plans for the latter have yet to be finalized.

Racine Mayor Cory Mason is creating a task force to study the police department’s use of force policies, and determine whether a citizen-based review board should be formed to investigate complaints against police. The task force is just part of Mason’s response to days of demonstrations in the wake of the Minneapolis in-police-custody death of George Floyd. In a news release, Mason also said that he’s directing all police officers to undergo implicit bias training. And the city will be posting all of its policies online. The city council is expected to meet in special session Thursday night to consider hiring a consulting firm to guide the task force.

Authorities in Kenosha are trying to spread the word about some potentially strong or fentanyl-laced heroin that has made its way into the city. Over a dozen opioid-related overdose calls were received by the fire department during the first nine days of the month. Most of the patients were revived with doses of Narcan. The county makes available to the public both Narcan and training on its use. For more information, email narcan@kenoshacounty.org.

A Kenosha City Council committee has recommended approval of a second, Saturday market for downtown Kenosha. Kenosha Public Market is expected to launch two weeks from Saturday in the parking lot of the Municipal Building. That’s the same day that Kenosha Harbor Market begins its COVID-19-abbreviated season in its usual location on 2nd Ave. Bill Siel is the alderman of the area and a member of the Public Works Committee that considered Kenosha Public Market’s proposal Wednesday night. Siel said he saw no reason to vote against it.
