(WGTD)---A ceremonial groundbreaking was held in Racine last week on a planned $100 million project that’s expected to rejuvenate the mostly-vacant Horlick Malted Milk complex.
“For people who are from Racine and know the Horlick name and its legacy, or frankly, if you’ve ever enjoyed a chocolate malt…the legacy of that and the genesis of that was all here on this campus about 120 years ago,” said Mayor Cory Mason. “To save it and restore it and to come up with a new use for the 21st century is just really a tremendous opportunity,” Mason told a small gathering.
The first phase will be a $40 million project to convert two buildings into 136 market rate and “affordable” apartments, according to developer Joshua Jeffers.
Overall, Jeffers envisions a “high-end mixed use neighborhood consisting of high-quality, multi-family housing, commercial and hospitality uses.”
While the apartments are expected to be ready for occupancy next spring, the entire project is expected to take several years to complete.
Jeffers has a successful track record in the city. His company recently converted the Gold Medal Camp Furniture Co. building in the uptown area into apartments.
