The Wisconsin Building Commission has approved a list of 71 community development projects across the state that are receiving funding from a program that's designed to primarily assist non-profits. Seven are in the WGTD listening area. They include $2 million for the new King Community Center in Racine, $250,000 for the Pike River South Branch Restoration Project in Kenosha County, $560,000 for the Burlington Library Foundation's "Our Community Library--Thinking Outside the Books" initiative, $26,000 for the restoration of the Webster House Museum in Elkhorn, $800,000 for the Aram library expansion in Delavan, nearly $200,000 for a capital improvement project in the Salem School District and $700,000 to build a family pavilion at the Yerkes Observatory in Williams Bay.

An event designed to promote public education will be held Thursday evening at Memorial Hall in Racine. The program will feature 50 portraits and the stories of 40 RUSD students and ten teachers. Running from 5-8, the evening will include food and a hands-on art space for kids. A panel discussion will begin at 6:30. The event is sponsored by Racine Educators United. The photographs were produced by Heidi Wagner, creator of "The Passions Project." She's supported by the National Education Association and the Wisconsin Education Association Council.

Racine Police say two arrests have been made in connection with the March 10th shooting death of 18 year-old Trent Harper. He died from a gunshot wound to the abdomen in the 3200 block of Republic Ave. In custody are an 18 year-old man and a 17 year-old boy. Police said in a news release the case demonstrates the department's unwavering commitment to seek justice for victims and their families.

The cause of an early Wednesday-morning fire in Kenosha in the 5900 block of 22nd Ave. remains under investigation. Police officers on patrol spotted smoke coming from the building and turned in the alarm. Five residents safely evacuated. Upon their arrival, firefighters found smoke and fire showing from a second-floor window. The fire was extinguished within minutes.
