Area Herb Kohl Foundation Scholarship and Fellowship Winners

(WGTD)---A dozen teachers and students in the tri-county, WGTD listening area have won scholarships and grants in the latest round of funding from the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation. The announcements were made Wednesday.

Student Excellence Scholarship winners include Crystal DiBiase from St. Joseph High School, Christian Karabas from Big Foot High School, Krista Krien from Catholic Central, Kennedy Lindeman from Waterford High School and Victoria Pollack from Williams Bay High School. According to a news release, all of the students demonstrated excellence in the academic arena and high motivation to achieve; have displayed a broad range of activity and leadership and have shown strong promise for success in college and beyond.

Student winners in another category have demonstrated exceptional initiative in the classroom and have shown strong promise for succeeding in life, but have not yet received other academic-based scholarships. They are Alexandra Olivera of Bradford High School, Elaine Nevin of Catholic Central, Grace Sezemsky of Elkhorn Area High School and Joshua Layton, a Kenosha resident who attends St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy in Delafield.

Each student will receive a $10,000 scholarship.

Teachers who are being honored with $6,000 grants to their schools include Matt Guth of Brookwood Middle School in Genoa City, Rachel Hartley of Wheatland Center Elementary and William Wald of Union Grove High School.

The Kohl Foundation Scholarship and Fellowship program was established in 1990 by Herb Kohl, a businessman and former U-S senator. To date, the Foundation has handed out nearly $18 million.
