Arena Discussions Continue; Federal Court Hearing on Tremper Transgender Case

Racine---A meeting between county officials and the consultant who studied the feasibility of a proposed arena for the downtown area is in the process of being lined up as Mayor Dickert continues to work to persuade the county to jump on board. In an interview with WGTD over the weekend, Dickert said he and county leaders met Friday in the ongoing effort to get county officials "comfortable" with the complex plan that involves a two-thirds city/one-third county funding mix. The county requested the meeting with the consultant, said Dickert who's arguing that an arena would strengthen the city's tax base and lead to lower property taxes elsewhere throughout the county.

Milwaukee---A federal judge will convene a hearing Tuesday afternoon on a request by a transgender Tremper high school student to prohibit the school from forcing him to use the bathroom of his biological identity at birth. The hearing will focus on Ash Whitaker's request for a temporary injunction and the school district's effort to squash the matter altogether. Several similar cases are making their way through the courts around the country and observers says it's just a matter of time before one lands on the doorstep of the U-S Supreme Court.

Kenosha---Incoming Kenosha County District Attorney Mike Graveley is expected to present to the county board Tuesday night a plan to curb heroin abuse. Heroin abusers who are picked up by law enforcement would be given a chance to kick their habits before charges would be filed, according to a news release from the D-A's office that announced the presentation. Graveley wants to partner with treatment providers that would use the drug vivitroil to reduce clients' opioid dependence.
