(WGTD)---The 29-year-old Kenosha man wanted in connection with the shooting of a 30-year-old Kenosha police officer was arrested last night in Gary, Indiana. And when they found him, Jonathan T. Massey was nursing a wound to his abdomen that was apparently sustained an exchange of gunfire with the officer who was shot Saturday morning.

According to a news release from the state Justice Department, Massey was taken to the hospital, treated and released. He's now in jail awaiting extradition.

The arrest by the U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Fugitive Task Force and the Gary Police Dept. SWAT team was made at a home in Gary. Several guns were recovered.

Massey was charged Monday with attempted 1st degree intentional homicide, possession of a firearm by a felon, felony bail jumping and misdemeanor bail jumping. According to online court records, Massey has several open criminal cases.

The officer is identified in the  complaint only by his last name, Pruett. According to Police and Fire Commission records, a Justin Pruett was hired in late 2017.

Pruett was said Monday to be in stable condition with a wound to his abdomen.

According to the criminal complaint, Pruett had gotten out of his squad on 50th St. near 13th Ave. at about 5 a.m. Saturday to speak to a man in a gray hoodie about a vehicle break-in that had just occurred.

Squad car video shows Pruett and the man on the sidewalk for several seconds. The man then walks back and forth in front of the squad car. At that point, Pruett tries to 'taze' the man, who then moves out of view. Then two gunshots sound and muzzle flashes are seen. Pruett retreats to the street and fires off eight shots himself before collapsing. Pruett had said that he wasn't sure whether he had hit the suspect.

All of this, according to the complaint,  is observed by "multiple" witnesses who are pictured in the video.

Three of them are quoted in the complaint as having spoken to investigators. One readily identifies Massey as the man in the gray hoodie. The other two told varying statements. One witness, after being told that she flunked a "voice stress test", changed her story and then made a positive ID.

Massey has a long criminal record, but it includes such things as battery, robbery, disorderly conduct, fleeing and bail jumping.
