Blake Charging Decision Preparedness Plan; Family Schedules Protest

Jan. 3, 2021 11:55; Updated 12:50p

(WGTD)---The extent to which Kenosha officials are prepared to go to avoid a repeat of the violence and property damage that broke out following the Jacob Blake shooting last summer was partially revealed Sunday.

In a joint news release, Mayor John Antaramian and Police Chief Daniel Miskinis signaled they're preparing for the worst once District Attorney Michael Graveley announces his decision on whether the officer who shot Blake in the back should face charges. The decision is expected to be announced sometime within the next two weeks.

The release indicated city officials are prepared if need be to limit city bus service, close roads, issue a curfew and put up protective fencing.

All of those measures were instituted during the unrest last summer in which officials were criticized for a lack of preparedness and poor communication.

Although Sunday's release did not specify how fencing would be used, a tall, metal fence was put up to encircle a four-block area around the courthouse and Public Safety Building last summer.

One new precaution: City officials said they might designate a space for demonstrations. Officials didn't specify how that might work.

Meanwhile, members of the Blake family and Kenosha community leaders said Sunday they planned to hold a news conference and stage a car-caravan demonstration late Monday afternoon. They're calling for the officer who shot Blake--Rusten Sheskey--to be fired and criminally charged.

Then Monday evening, the Kenosha City Council is expected to proactively authorize the mayor to declare a state of emergency once Graveley's decision is announced.

Antaramian and Miskinis also promised to post accurate and up-to-date information on social media.
