Blood Stains, Yellow Tape, As Kenosha Police Investigate Shooting

Sept. 27, 2020 9:45a; Updated 5p with news release

(WGTD)---A 25-year-old Illinois man was fatally shot in Kenosha overnight at the corner of 49th St. and 8th Ave.---just across the street from the former St. George Church and a block east from the trouble-prone Red Zone Bar & Grill.

And just a few feet from a bedroom window of a duplex.

The woman who was sleeping inside said she was awakened by an argument and then a "pop, pop." Because loud voices, fireworks and gunshots are common occurrences in the neighborhood, the woman said she only got up to check after she heard sirens and after her bedroom became drenched in red from the strobe lights of a squad car.

What stood out in the early-morning hour around bar time was two vehicles driving around a squad car that had pulled into the intersection.

Only a bit later did she notice a body on the sidewalk. According to a police department news release, the victim was pronounced dead at the hospital.

She isn't sure, but she'd put money on the shooting being tied somehow to the Red Zone.

Police would only say that their involvement began with a call to a "local establishment's parking lot" on a report of between 30 and 40 people arguing. As the crowd began to disperse, officers heard gunshots, according to the news release.

The Red Zone lost its cabaret license earlier this year because of problems both inside and outside the bar. The Red Zone retained its liquor license.

The woman said spill-over from the bar regularly impacts her corner.

According to scanner reports immediately following the shooting, police were looking for a vehicle with a Chicago-based registration.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact them at 605-5203. Anonymous tips can be left at Crime Stoppers at 262-656-7333.
