(WGTD)---Carthage College is investing in facilities and people in order to elevate its position as a top choice for anyone seeking to enter a health-related career.
The College announced this week that it's creating a "School of Health" to link existing programs like nursing and neuroscience and yet-to-be announced new offerings in biomedical sciences and other emerging fields.
The new school will be headed by Paul Martino. He's described in a release as an accomplished biomedical scientist who has worked in both the pharmaceutical industry and in academic settings. Martino has been a faculty member and administrator at Carthage since 2009.
Martino envisions that the new school will be in a position to create new partnerships and opportunities for students. Also planned are a speaker series and an annual healthcare symposium.
The new School of Health will also include existing programs in social work, sociology, criminal justice and a five-year track leading to a master's degree in athletic training.
The announcement comes as Carthage is beginning a multi-million dollar project to expand and renovate its Nursing Education Center.
Over half of the 11,000 applicants for this fall's admission expressed an interest in one or more of the programs under the School of Health umbrella, according to the release.
Creation of the new school is fueled in part by the growing need for healthcare professionals.
