(WGTD)---Several Kenosha police officers were in the line of fire last month as they attempted to confront a domestic violence suspect.

35 year-old Andres Casas is facing five counts of Attempted First Degree Intentional Homicide and several other charges in connection with the May 5th incident at a home in the 4900 blk. of 14th Ave. No officers were injured, but Casas was shot and wounded after he emerged from the home, purportedly with a gun in his hand, following an hours-long standoff.

According to the criminal complaint, the officers had gone to the house to arrest Casas on a domestic violence charge. He refused to let them in. After an officer kicked in the door, Casas reportedly fired several shots in the direction of the officers who were just outside the door and preparing to enter. Several more shots rang out as the officers scurried for cover.

The complaint quotes an investigator with the Racine County Sheriff’s Office as saying that if the officers had entered the home immediately after forcing entry they would’ve been shot.

The Racine department was called in to investigate because of the shooting injury to Casas. Casas told investigators later that he refused to surrender because he was on probation and didn’t want to go to jail.
