Domestic Violence Cases Increase During the Pandemic

(WGTD)---Some domestic violence experts are calling it a pandemic within a pandemic: An increase in domestic violence cases has accompanied the surge in COVID-19 and the resultant higher unemployment rates.

In Kenosha County alone over the past two days, 10 defendants appeared in court on new domestic violence-related charges.

No two cases were alike.

A 23-year-old man was accused of choking his sister who eventually had to arm herself with a knife. A 24-year-old man allegedly strangled his girlfriend, then fought with police when they arrived on the scene. A 53-year-old man allegedly held a knife to the throat of his female roommate while she was trying to talk to her boyfriend via a live video stream. A 27-year-old man fought with his girlfriend after she found him slumped over a Kenosha bar after a night of drinking and tried to take his keys away.

The steady stream of DV cases isn’t unique to Kenosha County.

During the same two-day period this week, five defendants made initial appearances on DV-related charges in Racine Court.
