Downtown Kenosha Redevelopment Project to go Before Council Next Month

(WGTD)---An eight-block, downtown redevelopment project that's been in the works for some time is ready to be presented to the Kenosha City Council.

Previously released details include an eleven-story, twin tower residential development--to be known as Brindisi Towers--that's expected to go up on vacant land just north of the Municipal Building. That building will be demolished and its offices relocated to a new structure just east of the Kenosha County Courthouse.

The release includes new details on a proposed performing arts center. The center is expected to consist of a 1,200-seat main theater and a smaller, 300-seat community theater with a gallery that'll be operated by the Kenosha Public Museum. The performing arts center will connect to a yet-to-be-determined higher-end hotel.

The "Downtown Vision" development agreement is scheduled to be reviewed by several council committees early next month. It'll then move on to the full council for approval, with the goal of receiving final project approval by the end of the year.

The release did not identify the developer that the city has been working with for many months. Nor did it spell out the financial element.

Consideration of the proposed downtown developments is happening almost parallel to an $18 million redevelopment of the partially burned-out Uptown busisness district. That project received preliminary approval of the city's Plan Commission last week.

"The well-being and vitality of our community and residents is always at the top of my mind, and these developments will bring new opportunities--new jobs, new businesses, new residential spaces--that will positively impact our city," Antaramian said in the release.
