Pleasant Prairie---The top Republican in the House--1st District Congressman Paul Ryan--just can't tamp down talk of a 'Dump Trump' movement.
On Monday Ryan conducted a town hall-styled forum with workers from two manufacturing plants at LakeView Corp.Park. The event was meant to highlight Republican plans to strengthen the manufacturing sector. Instead, the question and answer session steered away from economic development and toward a variety of other issues.
One of the questions came from 62 year-old Oscar Bautista, a machinist who came here as a legal immigrant from El Salvador some 40 years ago and who was deeply offended by Donald Trump' labeling of Hispanic immigrants as rapists and criminals. Bautista first asked Ryan Monday whether it's true that a candidate can't win the White House with less than a-third of the Latino vote. When Ryan responded in the affirmative, Bautista followed up. "So I asked him if it was still time to dump him (Trump) and get somebody like him (Ryan) running for the White House."
"No-no-no," said Ryan. "Thank you for asking that, but I'm not sure I should thank you for asking that actually. The convention is over."
Ryan went on to explain that Trump won the nomination fair and square.
But Bautista isn't the only one asking questions.
The Associated Press reported Monday that desperate conservatives are circulating a petition calling for the Republican National Committee to host a special meeting where Trump could be replaced as the party's presidential nominee.
Bautista said he was planning on supporting the Republican ticket this year, but definitely will not vote for Trump, saying he may cast his vote for Hillary, instead.
